Beschreibung:

[Americana] Parkman, Francis The Works, La Salle Edition Boston, 1902. In 20 volumes. #1 of 500 numbered sets. 8vo. Illustrated with portraits and plates. Bound in burgundy cloth with paper spine labels; top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed; frontispiece in first volume loose. A near-fine set. An A.L.s., addressed to his publisher, laid in: “ Messrs. Little, Brown, & Co/Dear Sirs,/Being too lame/to go to the Custom House, I/will ask of you the favor/of getting for me the books/parcel mentioned on the en-/closed card, and sending it/to me, with anything else to/my address which may be/in your hands. In doing/which you will much oblige/Yours very truly/F. Parkman/50 Chestnut St./11 Dec.” Parkman died in 1893 so clearly this letter, addressed to his publishers, refers to a different set of books. The number “1” on the limitation page does lead one to suspect it was a copy presented to his family but that is only speculation.
