Original decorative blind-stamped brown cloth gilt, (one corner bumped, spines relaid, original endpapers). Provenance : Rev. Thomas Wakefield. FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE. AN IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR inscribed on a tipped-in leaf by Isabel Burton for her husband in his absence to 'T. Wakefield from his old and sincere friend Richard Burton January 30 - 72.' So rapidly did 'Zanzibar' progress from manuscript to published work that Burton's paper on 'The Ukara or Ukerewe Lake' read before the R.G.S. on December 11, 1871 was printed in the appendix to Vol. I and this second issue was presented to Wakefield in just over a month. Wakefield was a missionary sent to Mombasa in 1861 under Johann Krapf and in this paper on Ukara Burton praised Wakefield's generally unacknowledged route-finding explorations and confirmation of a lake system in the Kilimanjaro region. Again, as this inscription is on a contemporaneously tipped-in sheet Isabel must have written it for the publisher to forward with the volumes to Wakefield. Beneath Zanzibar's exotic exterior Burton found a state of near anarchy, disease, squalor and a shamelessly open slave trade, enough to fill 1000 pages of text. Penzer p. 88-89. Casada 72. (2)
