BURTON, Richard Francis Zanzibar; City, Island, and Coast . In Two Volumes. London: Tinsley Brothers, 1872. 2 volumes, 8° (229 x 149mm). Folding map, 11 engraved plates and 4 plans. Original brown cloth gilt, pictorial cover blind-stamped, gilt, (partly unopened, spines repaired and a little shaken). Provenance : Llewellyn Dawson.(Presentation copy for the authors wife). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR, inscribed on a tipped-in leaf by Isabel Burton for her husband in his absence to 'Lt. Lewellyn Dawson Ret. With the hearty best wishes of Richard Burton for the success of the Livingstone Expedition. 31 January 1872.' Lieut. Dawson was in charge of the Livingstone Search Expedition that departed from Zanzibar for the interior, a search about which Henry M. Stanley published his own account in 1872. Burton had not been in Zanzibar since 1856 while outfitting his expedition with Speke and in 1859 to recuperate from that expedition. He managed to compile enough notes, however, to fill a 1000-page work. In 1871 when he returned to England from Damascus in dire financial circumstances, he luckily recovered the long-lost manuscript of his Zanzibar experiences and published almost immediately, desperate for financial stability. He delivered the finished manuscript to Tinsley in November 1871 and it was published by January 22. As the presentation inscription is on a contemporaneously tipped-in sheet Isabel may have written it for the publisher to forward with the volumes to Dawson. The book was well-received but reviewers and readers took exception to his 'unkind remarks' about Speke. Penzer p. 88-89. Casada 72. Spink 49. (2)
