FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (?). The distinctions between the first and second issues of the first edition noted by Penzer are the cloth colour and 4mm difference in paper size. Casada notes that Oliphant subsequently became close friends with Speke and, indeed 'he may have played no small part in the ultimate breach between Speke and Burton.' Oliphant was an odd mix, born into a family of fervent evangelicals, famous in law, sophisticated and widely travelled, secretary to Lord Elgin in China and Japan, and in the 1870s caught up in a fanatic religious sect.
