BOYDELL, John and Josiah, and John William EDY (ca.1780-1820). Boydell's Picturesque Scenery of Norway; with the principle Towns from the Naze, by the route of Christiania, to the magnificent Pass of the Swinesund ... with remarks and observations ... by William Tooke . London: by Hurst, Robinson and Co., late Boydell and Co., 1820. 2 volumes, 2° (485 x 335mm). Half-titles, list of plates in English and Norwegian, 80 hand-coloured aquatint plates by and after Edy, each numbered with captions in English and Norwegian and the Boydell imprint, on Whatman paper watermarked 1811-18. (Some spotting, mainly in vol.I affecting text leaves.) Contemporary half calf, gilt fillets and small ornaments on covers, rebacked with calf gilt (rubbed at extremities). Provenance : John Wardie (armorial bookplate). FIRST EDITION, LARGE-PAPER COPY. The prospectus for this work was published in 1811, and it appeared in eight parts between 1811 and 1820, bound in two volumes. Edy went to Norway in the summer of 1800 with William Fearnside (died 1807); they travelled and recorded the scenery of the country from Christiania (Oslo) northwards via Trondhjem, Mørebjene and Bergen. The large-paper issue has better impressions of the plates, whereas the later edition, in one volume, has wear to the plates disguised by heavier colour. This is the most important English colour plate book on Norway (Tooley 103) and one of very few on the country published in the 19th century. Abbey Travel 254; Eiler H. Schiötz, Utlendingers reiser i Norge , (1970) 295a. (2)
