Bowring (John). The Philippine Islands, 1st edition, Smith, Elder & Co., 1859, 8 tinted wood-engraved plates including frontispiece, 2 leaves of music notation, plates variably spotted, small tide-mark to lower outer corner of frontispiece, prize plate (Edinburgh Institution for the Education of Young Ladies) to front pastedown, bookplate of Lealholm Lodge (Yorkshire) to front free endpaper, all edges gilt, original blue pictorial cloth gilt, spine slightly faded, gilt stamp of Edinburgh Institution to rear board, 8vo (Qty: 1) Uncommon in this condition. Bowring (1792-1872) was consul at Hong Kong from 1839 to 1849, visiting the Philippines in 1848 with a view to extending trade. During his tenure he was 'accused of having sold himself to opium merchants' (ODNB).
