JOHN STUART MILL (1806-1873) Three page autograph letter signed ("J.S.Mill") to John Bowring, 3 pages, 4°, East India House, 5 March 1828. Discussing the "subject of Mr George Bentham's book" and expressing his surprise that "the Westminster Review is to say things which neither the editor nor the writer of the article agree in, merely because they will please Mr Bentham." He expresses his dismay at "[t]he tone in particular, which [Bentham] has assumed towards Dr Whately". "It is not an article on Logic, but emphatically, an article on Whately's book; & the good it does, if it should happen to do any, will depend wholly upon its being so considered." Exerting pressure on Bowring, he states that he "can have no objection to annex a note on Mr George Bentham's book; but it will contain, along with the praise, so much blame, that [he is] sure Mr Bentham would be less displeased by its being omitted altogether" or alternatively to "withdraw it altogether.". Small hole to edge and central area of third page. Staining and paper discolouration.
