[Botany - Periodical] EDWARDS, Sydenham The botanical register: consisting of coloured figures of exotic plants, cultivated in British gardens with their history and mode of treatment. London, J. Ridgway, 1815-vol., 8vo: pl. (n.c., some spotting on text but not on pl., some offsetting). Contemp. half calf, flat gilt-titled spines (spines discoloured and some damaged). Partly uncut and unopened copy. First edition of this lavishly illustrated horticultural magazine, with hand-coloured plates, that ran from to It was founded by the botanical illustrator S. Edwards (1769?-1819), who edited 5 vol. in 5 years. During this period, the text was provided by John Bellenden Ker Gawler (1764-and Edwards provided the paintings which were engraved and hand-coloured by assistants. After Edwards' death, editorial duties passed to the publisher J. Ridgway, who issued a further 9 vol. between and In John Lindley was appointed editor. A further vol. were issued before the magazine was discontinued in In Lindley also issued an "Appendix to the first twenty-three volumes of Edwards's botanical register" (here present) which included "A sketch of the vegetation of the Swan River Colony" from his hand.
