Contemporary tree calf, spines tooled gilt with red and black lettering labels gilt, housed in three custom boxes. Condition: some faint spotting to preliminaries, remains of ownership signature in vol 2; spines lightly creased and rubbed. Provenance: Gifted from Boswell to Mary Palmer Countess Inchiquin (inscription to ffee); F.T. Colby from W.E. Price (signed bookplate). a presentation copy from boswell to countess inchiquin, the niece of sir joshua reynolds Countess Inchiquin was the daughter of Mary Palmer sister of Sir Joshua Reynolds The Countess lived with Reynolds until his death and was his heiress. Boswell had considered writing a biography of Reynolds, including the controversies surrounding his presidency and resignation from the Royal Academy, but decided against the project out of respect for Countess Inchiquin. fine association between boswell and reynolds.
