AMERICAN NOTES FOR GENERAL CIRCULATION
New York: Harper, 1842. 8vo (240 x 150). Original printed wrappers. Condition: first few leaves stained; spine and edges lightly worn, some staining to upper wrapper. first american edition . (issued simultaneously with the Brother Jonathan Extra publication; see below). This is the work that resulted from Dickens's triumphal tour of America. The author used his American lecture tour as an opportunity to attack American copyright piracy, which was to rob him of a small fortune over the years. Scarce in original wrappers. There is also an edition published as an Extra by Brother Jonathan. Priority is impossible to establish. The price on the wrapper is given as “one shilling,” perhaps an ironic comment on the copyright issue.
