ca 1835-1840. Grey wool body with brass planchet with a looped horn and a laurel wreath within a stylized full sunburst. Immediately above planchet is a rosette with a five-pointed star. Interwoven strands of white cords drape the entire hat terminating in a pair of disk aigulettes with acorn tassels. One button on each side with a five-pointed star flanking both sides. Complete with red and white ostrich plumes. Visor and crown of hat outlined in brass. Interior with worn brown leather sweatband and brown glazed cotton liner. Paper label on inside dome of hat reads Military and Firecap Manufactory E.A.G. Roulstone Military and Fire Caps, Knapsacks and Cartridge Boxes, Saddles, Bridles and Harnesses, Solid Leather Trunks, Valises and Hat Cases. Tremont Row No. 19. Bank Store and House Trunks, Carpet Bags, Ladies Dress and Bonnet Trunks, Rocking Horses. Together with a General Assortment of Articles Usually Found in the Line. Boston. 16" overall height. [See Campbell, 2004: 142]. Provenance: Ex Pete and Jackie Kersten Collection Condition: Felt regions with some moth holes on both sides and the rear of the hat. Leather is near mint and nicely aged.
