black felt wool body with brass planchet depicting patriotic eagle with 1/4 stylized sunrays background. Immediately below is the company designation A and a suspended gold bullion horn. Two stamped Mass. Volunteer Militia brass buttons with right arm and sword image flank each side of the hat. Complete with blue bulbous wool pompom and black visor with underside painted forest green. Interior with brown leather sweatband and brown glazed cotton lining. Interior of crown with Boston gilded stamping plus a white strip with inked scripted name Danl Henderson. 8.25" height. While this shako was not part of the wartime issue uniform kit, a Corporal Daniel S. Henderson was found serving in Company H. of the nine-month 47th Massachusetts. The regiment served in the Department of the Gulf and was on duty at New Orleans from January 1863 through August 1863. Provenance: Ex Pete and Jackie Kersten Collection Condition: Felt wool is void of moth holes. Excellent condition.
