BORDONE, Benedetto (?1445-1460 - 1539). Isolario . Venice: Nicolo d'Aristotile Zoppino, June 1534. 2° (304 x 205mm). Title printed in red and black within ornamental border, 112 woodcut maps, including 4 double-page (3 on guards) and 2 full-page, one diagram, ornamental and historiated initials. (A little faint staining, last leaf with small marginal tear, minor tear in folding plates along guard, a few early pen scribbles on one map.) Modern binding retaining most of the 17th-century calf sides tooled in gilt with the arms of Louis Phélypeaux [Olivier 2258, fer 1] at centre (rubbed). Provenance : Louis Phélypeaux, seigneur de la Vrillieère et de Chateasneuf-sur-Loire (1598-1681), secretary of state, succeeding his father, from 1629. Second edition of Bordone's illustrated guide to the islands and peninsula's of the western ocean, the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean and the Far East. It has wide scope, encompassing recent discoveries in the Americas, inlcuding a plan of the city of Mexico ("Temistitan") before its destruction by Cortez. This edition is printed with the same woodcut maps designed for the first edition of 1528. The map on A6v represents the Americas, appearing as 'Terra de lavoratore' after João Fernandes of the Azores; two fictitious islands named 'Brasil' and 'Asmaide' are shown as often at this date (cf. Burden). The large double-page maps are of the world, Venice, the Mediterranean, and the Archipelago. Adams A-2482; Burden 8; Sabin 6419; Sander 1230; Shirley 59.
