BORDONE, BENEDETTO. Isolario...Nel qual si ragiona de tutte le Isole Del mondo... Ricoretto et de nuovo ristampato. Venice: (Francesco di Leno) [c. 1565?]. Folio, 327 x 224 mm. (12 7/8 x 8¾ in.), early plain pastepaper wrappers backed in heavy paper, edges entirely untrimmed, soiled and worn, spine and endpapers wormed, worming affecting blank margins of title (just grazing woodcut border) and first and last leaves, sewing loose, first quire detached; occasional very minor slight soiling or spotting, old restoration to gutter of B3v-B4r causing browning, light mainly marginal foxing to Venice map (fols. F1-2) and a few other leaves . Fourth edition, title within azuré woodcut border, woodcut printer's device, full-page woodcut of globe and compasses, 111 woodcut maps, of which 4 double-page, 2 full-page and 4 extending across two pages. Adams B-2483; Alden 540/5 (both dating to "c. 1540"); Phillips 165. This undated edition, the last to contain Zoppino's blocks (see previous lot) was formerly thought to have been printed c. 1537 or 1540; but the printer Francesco di or del Leno is know to have been active in the 1560s, and, as Phillips conclusively argues, the omission of a printed privilege from this edition, present in the three dated editions of 1528, 1534 and 1547, also points to a later printing. A tall copy, with deckle edges intact. Provenance : Unidentified early 20th-century Italian bookseller's label on front flyleaf -- Otto Vollbehr, "America Vetustissima" collection bookplate (sale, New York, Anderson, 24 April 1928, lot 13).
