Vasil'ev, 1912. 8° (229 x 155mm). Illustrated title, 23 photographic plates. Dark green-black morocco, spine and upper side lettered in silver, white moiré doublures, blind-stamped inner dentelles (spine lettering flaked-off). Provenance : Nicholas II (bookplate; pencil inscription) -- 'Printed in Russia' (import stamp) -- Hammer Galleries, New York (label for 'Russian Imperial Exhibit'). FIRST EDITION. NICHOLAS II'S COPY OF THE BIOGRAPHY OF HIS MARTYRED FRIEND, FROM HIS PERSONAL LIBRARY AT THE WINTER PALACE, with his bookplate, and the pencilled inscription on the last page, perhaps in the hand of his librarian: 'Book acquisition n.318, 27 April 1915, from His Majesty's bedroom'. In 1905 Launitz had been appointed Mayor of St. Petersburg and Major-General of the Imperial Household, at the request of Nicholas II. Launitz was assassinated in December 1906 during a church service.
