Rosenberg, 108 hand-colored engraved plates of fish, occasionally over a base printed in a color, some heightened with gum arabic, some with a pearlescent silver pigment, one with gilt, after Krüger, jnr. (92), Pater Plümier (12), Comte de Querhoent (1), Printz Motitz (3), by Ludwig Schmidt, A. F. Schmidt, Ferdinand Schmidt G. Bodenekr, and P. Haas Contemporary half sheep over marbled paper-covered boards, the flat spine with decorative gilt tooling at head and foot, the foot with blocked ownership initials in gilt 'N.A.', the spine with applied red leather lettering-piece, flanked by gilt fillets and decorative rolls and lettered in gilt 'Kupfertafeln / Zu Blochs / Naturgeschichte / der Ausländisc [sic.] / Fische." Condition : front hinge tender with engraved title and first plate slightly loose, small split to head of spine, slight scuffing to extremities, corners bumped. Provenance : N.A. (binding); Lynn Abbott Trust. a very fine copy of the the first volume of plates from the "ausländsche fische" section of one of the greatest ichthyological works of the 18th century, here containing many of the more exotic fish species figured and described by bloch in his "allgemeine naturgeschichte der fische". Bloch divided his work into two main sections: German and "ausländsche" or "foreign" fish. The german section was made up of three volumes of text illustrated with plates 1-108; the "foreign" section had 9 volumes of text and plates 109-432. The present volume has plates numbered 109-216, preceeded by an uncolored engraved title Titelkupfer zu Dr Bloch's Fischwerk. The plates are based on Bloch's own collection of about 1000 species of fish. He was born in Ansbach, studied medicine and the natural sciences and later practiced as a physician in Berlin.
