BIRNEY LETTICK Valley Girl 1983 Signed "Lettick" l.c. Oil on gessoed board 28 x 21 in. Lettick's whimsical depiction of the culture clash of Valley Girl and Punk Rocker became a virtual icon for a generation in this final painting of Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman for the One-Sheet. In the background is the now demolished Sherman Oaks Galleria, in the San Fernando Valley north of Hollywood, a principal gathering place of real-live Valley Girls and other assorted "Mall Rats" who have been portrayed, parodied or memorialized "like totally" in numerous subsequent films. In his first leading role Nicolas Cage captured the attention of the Hollywood community and began his rise to international super-stardom. To avoid any preferential influence, Cage did not reveal his real last name, Coppola, or his relationship to his famous uncle. Director Martha Coolidge (Real Genius, Lost in Yonkers, Out to Sea, Three Wishes, etc.) made her directorial mark by tackling subjects with both comical and socially interesting themes. Movie starred: Nicolas Cage, Deborah Foreman, Colleen Camp, Frederic Forrest, Elizabeth Daily, Lee Purcell. Directed by Martha Coolidge.
