BINDING--American]. VOLTAIRE, Francois Marie Arouet de (1694-1778). La Henriade . London, 1728. 4 o. Engraved title vignette, frontispiece and 10 engraved plates (frontispiece laid down, a few marginal repairs). Green morocco tooled in gilt by ELLEN GATES STARR, spine with seven raised bands in six compartments, green morocco turn-ins with red morocco inlaid oak leafs and gilt acorns, dated 1905 and signed "EGS," gilt edges (rubbing to raised bands and minor wear to spine ends). Provenance : H. Alexander Phillips (bookplate); Springfield, Mass, City Library Association (bookplate). An American binding. Ellen Gates Starr (1859-1940) established in the early 1900s a bookbindery at Hull House (Chicago), where she taught bookbinding and established a reputation as a master craftsperson.
