Bible [English]. [The Bible: translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke..., London: Deputies of Christopher Barker 1589], general title lacking, New Testament title within decorative woodcut border, Apocrypha present, black letter text, with incomplete Concordance at rear, numerous leaves torn and frayed throughout volume with loss (many repaired), volume unsewn and many gatherings strengthened at spine edge, some soiling and marks, contemporary calf, boards detached, lacking spine and clasps, 4to (leaf size 20.8 x 16.2 cm), together with Bible [English], [The Bible, that is, the Holy Scriptures conteined in the Olde and Newe Testament, Translated according to the Ebrew and Greeke, and conferred with the best Translations in divers Languages..., Imprinted at London [i.e. Amsterdam]: by the Deputies of Christopher Barker 1599 (i.e. circa 1599-1640)], lacking all before I1, with New Testament title present, incomplete Psalms & Prayers at rear, dust-soiling and some marks, sewing broken and some leaves detached and frayed, contemporary calf, covers loose, lacking clasps, worn, 4to (leaf size 21.2 x 16.6 cm) (Qty: 2) Bible 1589: Herbert 200; Darlow & Moule 154; STC 2151. With *iiib, 2nd column: Yea verily: that by sight, taste and fee- / ling, as well as hearing we might bee / instructed, assured, and brought to obedi- / ence. Bible 1599: Herbert 252; Darlow & Moule 191; STC 2177. These Bibles were printed probably in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker, for the use of English Puritans in the Low Countries. There are many editions bearing this date, which while agreeing closely are yet distinct. No doubt a certain number of copies were originally issued in a mixed state. The nominal date, 1599, is probably untrue in almost every case. The Bible here is a distinct edition from others dated 1599, with Esther i:1 '... and / seven and twenty provinces'. This is printed from identically the same setting of type as an edition issued with the date 1633; the latter, however, has a new imprint on the three title-pages and at the end of the book: Imprinted at Amsterdam, for Thomas Crafoorth. By Iohn Fredericksz Stam... Probably 1633 is the correct date, and copies were issued simultaneously, some with Barker's imprint and the date 1599, others with Stam's imprint dated 1633. Some copies, indeed, bear both imprints and dates (Herbert and Darlow & Moule). Sold with all faults, not subject to return.
