BATHURST, Captain Walter (1764?-1827). A collection of letters and documents relating to the naval career of Captain Bathurst (commander of the Genoa in the battle of Navarino), including 12 naval commissions, 1795-1825 , a manuscript schedule of ships in which he served, 1781-1827 ; 4 orders and memoranda relating to Mahon, Toulon and the raising of the siege of Tarragona ( 1811 ); 3 autograph letters signed to his wife, Marianne, and 2 to his sons, in one describing his audience with the Sultan of Turkey, 'he was dressed in a yellow silk pelice trimmed with beautiful sables and in his turban had a Paradise plume and an elegant diamond egret in it', and (in June 1827) saying that he had not expected to stay at sea for 5 or 6 weeks more, and generally with news and on family matters; autograph retained copy of a letter to Lord Melville seeking an appointment at Portsmouth ( 1825 ), together 30 pages, 4to and folio ; autograph letter book, Salsette, 9 November 1808 - 15 May 1813 , including abstracts of letters mostly on naval and financial matters, also on his wish to return from the Tropics, requesting the Lords Commissioners that the Customs be asked to release a shawl given to him by the Sultan of Turkey 'in consequence of my having brought out powder for the use of the Sultan's army', and to J[ohn] C[am] Hobhouse reminding him to pay three pounds to Messrs Coutts or Mrs. Bathurst, including also a diary ( 8 pages ) of his voyage from Malta to Constantinople, in a notebook, 42½ pages, 8vo ; and approximately 120 letters addressed to Bathurst including ST. VINCENT, Earl of, Admiral (1735-1823): 12 autograph letters signed on naval matters, his nephew's joining the navy, his health, congratulating Bathurst on his preferment, and 10 letters and documents signed, naval orders, mostly off Cadiz and Gibraltar, 1798-1801 (a few later) ; PELLEW, Sir Edward, Admiral (1757-1833, 1st Viscount Exmouth). 3 autograph letters signed on naval matters and a general order signed; BATHURST, William Cavendish, Lord (1774-1839). 5 autograph letters signed (in one asking for supplies of tea from India where he had been Governor General); KEATS, Sir Richard Gordon Admiral (1757-1854). 8 autograph letters signed, Superb, 10 March - 13 November 1809 , on naval matters; ADAIR, Sir Robert (1763-1855). 8 autograph letters signed, Pera, 22 February - 15 September 1810 , about the formalities for bringing the Fame into Constantinople, asking for powder and lead for the Turkish army, and corn, all related to the arrangements for collecting him at the end of his embassy; and approximately 65 letters by other signatories, generally on matters relating to the navy, admission, preferments etc., a few on financial matters and by members of his family; together with 21 letters to Mrs. Bathurst, circa 1817-1845 , including 7 by her son John Oldenshaw Bathurst ( Jamaica, etc. ), 2 by Admiral Sir Edward Codrington, and other correspondents on subjects including her son's promotion, her pension, family matters etc.; and letters, notes and transcripts of letters relating to Admiral Sir Thomas Dundas (1765-1841), 17 items, altogether approximately 170 items in manuscript, various sizes , a few printed items (a few letters discoloured and worn). In the course of a remarkably long naval career Walter Bathurst served in his youth in the West Indies, of Newfoundland and under Earl St. Vincent off Cadiz. He commanded several vessels in the East Indies and was in the Mediterranean with the Fame from 1810-1815. In 1820 he also captained the ship that took the Duchess of Orleans back to France from exile. He commissioned the Genoa in 1824. Bathurst was killed at Navarino at the age of sixty-eight. His ship was next in line to Admiral Codrington's flagship, the Asia , and suffered 26 casualties, the highest of any ship in the fleet.
