DICKENS, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby . London: Chapman and Hall, April 1838-October 1839. 20 in 19 original parts, 8° (223 x 136mm). Engraved portrait after Maclise and 39 etched plates by Phiz. (Occasional slight discoloration, especially in Part 16). With all advertisements and advertisers except Amesbury Patent Supports in Part 3 and Tyas Heads in Parts 7 and 8; advertisement in Part 19/20 for Hills Seal Wafers has five specimen colour wafers (intact); in Part 8 Mechi's Catalogue has red and black wrappers; Part 16 has the uncalled-for slip 'Views for Tourists'. Part 4, p.123 has 'visiter' for 'sister'; part 5, p.160 has 'latter' for 'letter'. Original wrappers (some light soiling, some backstrips renewed or repaired), later cloth case. Provenance : Thomas Anderson, Joseph Tempest, Mrs.Hawkins (contemporary ownership inscriptions on various upper wrappers.) FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE in monthly parts.
