BARBARO, Daniello (1513-1570). La Pratica della Perspettiva . Venice: Camillo and Rutilio Borgominieri, 1569. 2°. Woodcut device on title, numerous diagrams and a fine series of headpieces in perspective.[ Bound after: ] RUSCONI, Giovanni Antonio (c.1520-1587). Della Architettura . Venice: Giolito, 1590. 4°. Title within an elaborate woodcut pediment, numerous cuts throughout. 2 works in one volume, (288 x 195mm). (Occasional faint, mostly marginal dampstain, occasional light soiling, a few small wormholes in margin of first few leaves.) Early vellum over thin pastepaper boards with yapp edges, covers with double-ruled border in blind, spine with later paper label in manuscript, red sprinkled edges (new endpapers, lacking ties). Provenance : Donaueschingen, Fürstenberg Library (penciled pressmark on title verso). FIRST EDITIONS OF TWO INFLUENTIAL ARCHITECTURAL MANUALS. Barbaro's Perspettiva contains one of the earliest descriptions of the use of a biconvex lens in the camera obscura to assist in drawing scenes from nature. It is known in several issues dependent on the presence and agreement of dates between the title and colophon -- with no precedence conclusively established. Rusconi's lavishly illustrated abridgement of Vitruvius is one of the most attractive architectural works of the period. The illustrations include a fine series demonstrating the development of vernacular architecture, craftsmen at work, construction diagrams and examples of tools and machinery. It appears here in its second issue, distinguished by the addition of a list of errata to the verso of the final leaf. Adams B-171 and R-960; Mortimer, Harvard Italian 39 and 551; Fowler 280.
