BANDELLUS, Vincentius] Libellus recollectorius de veritate conceptionis beatae Virginis Mariae, Milan: Christophorus Valdarfer, 1475. 4° (205 x 157mm). 126 leaves, 38 lines, double column, gothic letter, initials and paragraph marks supplied alternately in red and blue, vellum sewing-guards. (First leaf soiled, with a few small holes and with large initial V almost completely rubbed away, hole in the final register leaf, many paragraph marks at the beginning smudged through water staining, mostly in the margins, to a greater or lesser extent throughout, slight soiling at beginning and end). 17th-century Italian vellum. 'The author's name is not given in the book, which has also been ascribed to Jacobus de Susato (Soest), but it is shown to be Bandello's work by the richauffi dedicated by him to the Duke of Ferrara under the title De singulari puritate et praerogatiua conceptionis Saluatoris nostri and first printed by Rugerius at Bologna in 1481', BMC. The author (1435-1506) studied at Bologna and became professor of theology at that city's university. At some point he joined the Dominicans, becoming general of the order in 1501. He was one of the most violent opponents of the Immaculate Conception and treated the Franciscans (who defended it) as idiots and heretics until he was stopped by Sixtus IV's bull in 1483 which gave judgement in favour of the Franciscans. He was a close relation of the famous novelist of the sixteenth century, Matteo Bandello. Hain 2352; GKW 3237; BMC VI, 726; Goff B-48.
