STEVIN, Simon. La castrametation ... [ Nouvelle maniere de fortification par escluses ], Leiden: Matthieu & Bonaventure Elzevir, 1618. 2 parts in one volume. 2° (314 x 199mm.). Engraved portrait of Maurice of Orange and Nassau, the dedicatee, woodcut device on titles and numerous illustrations and diagrams in the text, quire E in part 2 a folded single sheet with a large woodcut. (Part one lacks the final blank, possibly bound at the end, title of part 2 reinforced at the inner margin, some browning). Contemporary vellum. (Rebacked, lightly soiled). First edition in French of these two military treatises by Stevin and the only books from the Elzevir Press to contain the two brothers' names in the imprint. According to Brunet, they are usually found bound together. Brunet V, 535; Willems 149; cf. Cockle 703 & 809.
