Beschreibung:

ATHENAEUS of Naucratis (fl. c. 200 A.D.). Deiphosophistae , in Greek. Edited by Marcus Musurus. Venice: Aldus Manutius and Andreas Torresanus, August 1514.
ATHENAEUS of Naucratis (fl. c. 200 A.D.). Deiphosophistae , in Greek. Edited by Marcus Musurus. Venice: Aldus Manutius and Andreas Torresanus, August 1514. 2° (320 x 210mm). Aldine device on first and final leaf. (Some light soiling to first few pages and final leaf, few small stains, final leaf with small clean marginal tear.) 19th-century English roan, triple gilt fillet, gilt flower corner device, gilt and panelled spine with morocco labels, gilt edges (joints a touch rubbed, few light scuff marks). Provenance : James Lewis Knight Bruce of Roehampton (1791-1866; armorial bookplate) — John Carrington of Shenley Park (booklabel) — erased inscription on final leaf. EDITIO PRINCEPS, PROBABLY THE EARLIEST KNOWN TEXT ON COOKERY and of Athenaeus' only extant work. The title means 'men learned in the arts of the banquet', and the banquet is the forum for 23 learned men, some with the names of real persons, such as Galen and Ulpian, to discuss philosophy, literature, law, medicine and other disciplines. It also contains much practical detail pertaining to ancient food, wine and dining customs, with many anecdotes deriving from now lost authors. Aldus began to plan a Greek edition of Athenaeus soon after establishing his press; a one-page proof of an unrealised edition, printed in Aldus's second Greek type (first used in 1496) and containing the epitome of book 1, survives at the Pierpont Morgan Library. John Carrington was associated with St John Hornby and the Ashendene Press and had a fine collection of Private Press Books. His library was sold at Sotheby's in December 1939 and included several books from the Aldine Press. Adams A-2096; Ahmanson-Murphy 123; Cat. del fondo Italiano e Latino delle opere di Gastronomia , I, no.112; Hoffmann I, 394; Renouard Alde , 67:4; Vicaire 50.
