Title: Art and Animation archive of J.D. Salinger’s friend, artist Michael Mitchell Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Approximately 150 miscellaneous original pencil and pen drawings, sketches, cels, mixed media and copies of Mitchell’s work, ranging in size from 8 x 11” to 26 x 40”, most on heavy 20 x 28” board. The archive includes mock-ups of his 1969 and 1974 Lithopinion pieces (see preceding entry) and the published design, apparently by Mitchell, for Marilyn French’s 1977 landmark feminist novel, “The Woman’s Room”, and a 1983 psychedelic/futuristic drawing of a rock musician which may have been a contribution to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Rock Musical “Starlight Express”. There are also designs for the 1985 animated productions "The Beastlys” and “Galtar and the Golden Lance”, and for a later tribute to Mel Blanc, the famous “voice” of Bugs Bunny. But the majority of items are both undated and untitled, varying from anatomical charcoal sketches to a partial vivid watercolor of a slave ship. Some items in this group may also belong to the “Dumplings” animation project detailed in the next catalogue listing, but most are difficult to identify as they were kept in no particular order, and sometimes misplaced in labeled folders. The collection as a group is a rich representation of the artist’s work at the time that he vainly proposed to animate an unpublished story by his old friend Salinger.
