Title: Collection of magazine art and book design by Michael Mitchell during the years of his artistic career when he became friends with J.D. Salinger and designed the Dust Jacket for “Catcher in the Rye” Author: Place: Publisher: Date: 1950s-60s Description: Ten magazine issues with contributions signed “Michael Mitchell” or “Mike Mitchell”, mostly for short stories, beginning with Janet Graham’s “Girl Alone” in Cosmopolitan, June 1948 (coincidentally, Salinger also published in Cosmo that Year) and including Coronet (Dec. 1950), Woman’s Day (Dec. 1951, Feb. 1952, Mar. 1952).and Colliers (Nov. 1949, March 1951, Feb. 1952, Oct. 1952, July 1953) Four books with Mitchell Dust Jackets and/or text illustrations, published after he apparently gave up magazine work: Madeline Myers, “Touch the Harvest Moon” (1955), John Dickson Carr, “Captain Cut-Throat” (1955, American edition only), Lillian Gardner, “Exactly Like Ben’s” (1956) and W.W.Bauer, et al, “Seven or So”, Book Two of a Healthy and Safety series for Children) (1962 reprint of the 1957 original). Three complete issues of “Lithopinion”, journal of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America, New York (Nos. 13, 21, 23, 1969-1974) containing biographic information about Mitchell, and examples of avant-garde artistic work from his New York City studio (including his “Reflections on Violence” in America during the tumultuous 1960s) in the years between his book design period and the start of his animation work in Los Angeles.
