Venice: M. Sessa, 28 August 1503. [ Bound with :] -- Opera . Translated by William of Moerbeke (c.1215-1286), edited by Nicolào Tartaglia (c.1506-1557). Venice: V. Ruffinelli, 1543. [ and :] -- De Insidentibus Aquae . Venice: C. Troianus, 1565. 3 works in 1 volume, 4° (207 x 140mm). Diagrams throughout, woodcut initials, printers' devices on the titles, the first work with a large woodcut. (Occasional light marginal spotting, some leaves in the second and third work lightly browned.) Later, probably early 19th-century vellum, spine lettered in gilt, edges red (boards bowed, remnants of paper label on the spine). Provenance : St. Sylvester Library (title stamp in first work). A SAMMELBAND OF IMPORTANT ARCHIMEDES PUBLICATIONS, including: first editions of Tetragonismus , a very early appearance in print, and of his Opera , 'AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT WORK... WHICH OPENED THE ARCHIMEDEAN REVIVAL OF THE 16TH CENTURY' ( Bibliotheca Mechanica ). Tetragonismus contains both De Mensura Circuli and De Quadratura Parabolae , based on the 13th-century translation by William Moerbeke, together with similar works by Campanus and Boethius. It includes one of the earliest theoretical calculations on the quadrature of the circle, using Archimedes' early form of integration, and one of the earliest calculations of Pi. Opera was edited by Tartaglia, who also oversaw the accurate preparation of the diagrams. Apart from excerpts published by Valla in 1501, the Tetragonismus represents the earliest appearance of Archimedes in print in Latin. The 1565 edition of De Insidentibus Aquae is the first to include Tartaglia's translation of the second book of Archimedes' works on floating bodies. Adams C-470, A-1530, A-1534; Bibliotheca Mechanica , pp.314-315; Riccardi I,40 and 220, and I,42.6 and 498; Sander 1574; Stillwell, Awakening of Science II, 141.
