ANONYMOUS. Pianta dell'illustrissima città di Todi e suo Territorio . No imprint, [c. 1580]. Woodcut map of Todi and surrounding region on a full Royal sheet, 530 x 395mm. Letterpress title with crowned-eagle device in a ruled section at upper left corner, blank decorated strapwork catouche surmounted by episcopal arms, the escutcheon changed with pen-and-ink, compass rose, scalebar, graticule border, manuscript '128' at lower left. (Old horizontal folds, some light discolouration, some small repaired tears, edges partly reinforced on verso, trimmed to image.) VERY RARE Italian woodcut map. 'Maps from wood-blocks were ... published in Italy, though in small numbers and mostly before 1500. Though printed in fairly large numbers whole editions have entirely disappeared, and they are known for the most part by one or two examples only, from Italian reductions, or simply from written record.' (Tooley, Maps in Italian Atlases of the Sixteenth Century , p. 13). This map is particularly clear in the layout and presentation of its information. Not in Tooley; watermark Woodward 112.
