An interesting collection of items relating to the two voyages of HMS 'Challenger' and its namesake: these include maps, geometry instruments, silver presentation items, certificates and a rum tot. The earlier trip , from 1872-1876, was the first systematic attempt to on a large scale to explore the depths of the ocean. There are two books relating to this, both sadly in poor condition. The second trip was in 1950-52 and was described in an extract from the International Hydrographic Review (May 1964): 'Challenger spent the winter of 1951-52 around Japan and in April 1952 proceeded to the Mediterranean until September, when they sailed for England to arrive at Portsmouth 2 years and 5 months after leaving Plymouth...'. She circumnavigated the world from 1950 to 1953 which included surveying in the West Indies and the Far East. It was on
