Alexander Hunter Indian Sketch Book, vol.I Figures, vol.II Landscapes & Antiquities . Madras (?): 1842-1847. Large 4° (540 x 420mm). Two albums containing 418 original drawings, oil studies, lithographs and etched plates, mostly views and portraits in Madras and Calcutta, mounted within wash-painted paper borders. Original red half morocco, gilt-lettered red morocco labels, (corners and head of spines worn, foot of one spine frayed). Alexander Hunter's career was spent in the Madras Medical Service as a surgeon. He was also an enthusiastic amateur artist with an interest in lithography and etching. The India Office Library has a volume of etchings by Hunter, Indian Sketches for the year 1842 , comprising 16 plates of views in Patna and Benares, printed by P.S. D'Rozario, 5 Tank Square, Calcutta. He edited the Madras Art Journal , 1850-51, and contributed to the Madras Exhibition of 1857. The first 7 drawings, including 3 watercolours, depict officers and troopers of the Nizam of Hyderabad's cavalry, and it has been suggested that these volumes were specially prepared and bound for presentation to the Nizam. They contain 270 pen and ink, pencil and watercolour drawings, in various sizes to 460 x 255mm. approximately, 9 oil studies, 125 lithographic and 14 etched plates. Numerous portraits include 27 subjects in the Madras Supreme Court. Other drawings include views of the countryside, monuments, ruins, architectural detail etc., in a variety of locations in and around Calcutta and Madras, including Cuddapah, Bellary, Ghooty Fort, Adony Fort, Danish Governor's house at Sadras, Chingleput, Guddack etc. (2)
