Beschreibung:

Albumen photograph, 9.75 x 7 in., mounted to 6.875 x 9.75 in., featuring a group of variously aged and dressed crew members posed together on the deck of the Falls of Halladale, with T. H. Wilton's gilt imprint and "Falls of Halladale" handstamped on mount. Built in 1886 for the Falls Line of Glasgow, Scotland, the Falls of Halladale was manufactured for long-distance bulk carrier trade. The barque made numerous documented voyages to and from the port of San Francisco where this image was taken ca 1886-1908. Perhaps this vessel is best known for its demise which occurred when it wrecked upon the rocks of Victoria, Australia on November 14, 1908. All crew members survived, including the captain who was found guilty of misconduct resulting in the sinking, and the shipwreck attracted crowds for weeks as it gradually broke and sank into the shallow water. Condition: Some minor discoloration and small abrasions on mount. Approx. 1 in tear in photograph bottom center.
