ADVENTURES INTO TERROR Nos. 3, 4 and 6 * Lot of Three Comic Books Publisher: Atlas [Indicia: Current Detective Stories, Inc.] Date Published: April-October 1951 Description: #3: VG (4.0). Spine ticks, a few short transverse spine tears, 1/4" split to top spine, small paper loss to bottom spine, slight spine roll, a few small rubs and short tears, two corners creased. Cream to light tan pages. We were strict on this one, but its likely to slab at 4.5, and it's a cinch to clean and press to at least 5.0. GPAnalysis: A 3.5 sold for $123 in 4/23. #4: VG- (3.5). Mild spine roll, spine rubbed and stressed, 1" split bottom spine, small edge nicks, moderate reading creases, pencilled distributor's note ("8/3/16") to "R" in "TERROR". Off-white pages. Clean and press to 4.0? GPAnalysis: A 3.0 sold for $220 in 4/22. #6: VG- (3.5). Slight spine roll, spine stress, some staple rust, bottom corner creased and bumped, small white residue speck to man's pants leg on front cover, back cover rubbed and with handling creases, grease-pencilled distributor's mark ("C") to "T" in "TERROR." Cream pages, light tan edges. Not a bad copy, pleasantly soft and floppy in the hand. If not for the staple rust, this would be an exemplary 4.0. GPAnalysis: A 4.0 sold for $138 in 9/22. Covers and art: Mike Sekowsky, Carl Burgos, Russ Heath, Gene Colan, Ed Winiarski, Jay Scott Pike, Don Rico, Paul Reinman. Ghost-gloves send guilty guy to the gallows; goon hoodwinks hooligan into copping corpses from the local boneyard (“Why you LOUSY GOON… go snatch your own stiffs!”); zitty readers zapped by acne ad (“Your good qualities — intelligence, character, dignity… are completely cancelled out by your skin”); vampire bootlegs an Adventures into Terror funnybook from scratch in an elaborate scheme to drink the reader’s blood; Russ Heath's "The Brain!" features a severed Nazi head that breaks the fourth wall to mind control the weak-willed reader (“One never knows where I’ll turn up next! Who knows? My next choice may be YOU!”). A limited edition of ten hardcover catalogues is available, in addition to a few dozen softcovers. Fun reference, great keepsake, fully illustrated, chockablock with obscure facts, gags, bon mots. Softcovers are $40, deluxe hardcovers with dust jackets and limitation plates are $200.
