A Sèvres tea service formerly in the collection of David Garrick 1760-4 decorated with the 'hop trellis' pattern of alternating red hop staves and trailing berried hops within blue borders, comprising a teapot and cover théière cannelé, a hot milk jug and cover pot à lait Hébert cannelé, a sucrier and cover sucrier cannelé, a milk jug pot à lait à trois pieds of the second size, a slop bowl jatte Hébert, six cups and saucers, gobelet cannelé et soucoupe of the second size, all presented in a kingwood parquetry travelling case, the fitted interior lined with watered green silk, a contemporary paper label inside the cover inscribed David Garrick A brass plate on the carrying case states 'Tea service of Sevres in box. The Property of David Garrick Bought by Miss Burdetts-Coutts at the sale at his house on his widow's death.' The lot also includes a letter (not dated) with the address Earls Place, Mark Cross, Tunbridge Wells and in manuscript; David Garricks Tea Service of Sèvres Porcelain / Purchased at the Sale of his widows effects by Mrs Burdett-Coutts (afterwards Baroness Burdett-Coutts) / Lent by Mrs Burdett Coutts. Quantity: 20 interlaced L's mark, teapot, three cups and one saucer also with dateletter h for 1760, sucrier, three cups and four saucers with dateletter L for 1764, teapot with painter's mark of a heart for François Fontelliau, sucrier and four saucers with pin mark for Louis-Jean Thévenet père. Incised marks: teapot and one saucer with S, slop bowl with o, two saucers with CS, two with gp, three cups with IC, three with jC teapot 12cm., 4¾in., hot milk jug 13cm., 5in., jug 9.4cm., 3¾in., sucrier 10.4., 4in., slop bowl 15cm., 6in., carrying case 18cm., 7¼in. high x 49.5cm., 19½in. wide x 44cm., 17¼in. deep
