A RARE WILLIAM & MARY WALNUT AND ARABESQUE MARQUETRY SIDE TABLE

The delicately rendered 'seaweed' or 'arabesque' marquetry (called 'filigree' in the early eighteenth century) is characterized by its two-dimensionality and dense foliate scrolls, and its panels are cut in a single operation. The intricate decoration of this fine side table was introduced during the reign of William and Mary (1689-1702). The density of its all-over highly stylised foliate and scrollwork ornamentation, of very fine quality denotes the piece as English and in particular associates it with Gerrit Jensen, Royal Cabinet maker (d.1715).
A very closely related side table was sold Christie's 20th Nov 2011, Lot 441 ($43,750 incl. BP).
Condition Report:
Overall there are some scratches, marks, chips, knocks and abrasions.
In restored condition and robust. It is not clear the extent of restoration though it is likely that the legs and feet could be later replacements possibly from the early 20th century, likewise it is likely that the flat stretcher has been repaired. Signs of other restoration.
The brass handles, escutcheon, lock and key are later.
Exceptional use of specimen timbers and the intricate detail of the seaweed marquetry of the top, stretcher and to all sides.
