Title: A Philosophical and Political History of the Settlements and Trade of the Europeans in the East and West Indies...Newly translated from the French by J. O. Justamond...with a New Set of Maps Adapted to the Work, and a Copious Index Author: Raynal, Abbé [Guillaume-Thomas François] (1713-1796) Place: London Publisher: Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell Date: 1788 Description: 8 volumes. With a copper-engraved frontispiece portrait and 6 (of 7) folding copper-engraved maps. 8x5, bound in late 19th century half polished brown morocco and beige cloth, ruled in gilt, spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers, hinges reinforced with brown cloth, top edges gilt. "Revised, Augmented" Edition. Raynal's seminal work on the relations between the European colonial powers and their far-off conquests and domains. Originally published anonymously in 1770 in a shorter version, the book expressed strong sentiments against despotism, slavery, the established religious order, the Inquisition, and the colonial system in general. It was suppressed by the French monarchy, and early editions were produced in Geneva, Amsterdam, Lausanne, The Hague, London and elsewhere. Sabin 68089. Lot Amendments Condition: Slight fading and mild edge wear to exterior, joints rubbed, tiny chip to middle of Vol. VI spine; occasional wear to contents, maps fairly intact with only a few small archival paper repairs; each with a bookplate on the front pastedown, else a very good or better set.
