Title: A Philosophical and Political History of the Settlements and Trade of the Europeans in the East and West Indies... Author: Raynal, Abbé [Guillaume-Thomas François] Place: London Publisher: Printed for A. Strahan and J. Cadell Date: 1788 Description: 8 volumes. Copper engraved portrait frontispiece and 5 folding maps (of 7). (8vo) later full leather, gilt spines, red and green morocco spine labels. "Revised, Augmented" Edition. Raynal's seminal work on the relations between the European colonial powers and their far-off conquests and domains. Originally published anonymously in 1770 in a shorter version, the book expressed strong sentiments against despotism, slavery, the established religious order, the Inquisition, and the colonial system in general. It was suppressed by the French monarchy, and early editions were produced in Geneva, Amsterdam, Lausanne, The Hague, London and elsewhere. Provenance: Mary Poulton Dawkins (1820-1906). Lot Amendments Condition: Moderate to heavily rubbed extremities, very slight loss at heads and/or heels of spine; each map with a stub tear, a few with very small holes; map in Vol III with 5" stub tear; foxed; else very good.
