Title: A New Universal Atlas Containing Maps of the various Empires, Kingdoms, States and Republics of the World... Author: [Mitchell, Samuel Augustus] Place: Philadelphia Publisher: Thomas Cowperthwait Date: 1854 Description: With 71 hand-colored maps (3 are double-page), plus insets; hand-colored frontispiece (showing rivers and mountains of the world), chromolithograph title and contents pages, 17¼x13¾, original half-sheep and marbled boards, front cover with large gilt leather label. Cowperthwait's edition after Mitchell's Atlas, with the maps copyrighted by Cowperthwait, mostly in 1850. Thirty-one of the maps are devoted to the United States, 2 of those are double-page (U.S. and New York). Also with a full-page map of including the one of California with territories of Oregon, Washington, Utah and New Mexico (pre-Gadsden Purchase border). Short inked gift inscription dated 1858 on the title page. Lot Amendments Condition: Head of spine worn and torn, scratches to boards; front hinge completely cracked through, finger-soiling (chiefly to endpapers and margins), scattered tan stains; most maps near fine, clean and bright; binding needs repair.
