A Hizen Short Blade ( Wakizashi ) in Mounts ( Koshirae ) Edo period (17th century), signed Harima daijo Fujiwara (no) Tadakuni The blade shinogi-zukuri (longitudinal ridge), iori-mune (shallow-peaked back) with a medium point and torii-zori curvature; the forging pattern koitame with jinie (hard metal granules on the surface); the tempered edge notare ni gunome midare with a long turnback at the tip; the tang unshortened with sujikai (diagonal, descending to the right) file marks and one peg hole; gold 'icicle' habaki Koshirae comprising a brown lacquer saya (scabbard) with a rough surface and fitted with a shakudo nanako kozuka with eggplants and beans in gold and shakudo and the menuki designed to match, the fuchi-gashira deeply carved with scrolling peonies in gilt against a shakudo nanako ground, signed Mino ju Senzen , the Mino-school mokko tsuba decorated with silver and gilt flowers on a shakudo nanako ground rimmed with gilt dragons; with two sword tool kits 18 5/8in. (47.3cm.) long; width near habaki 1 3/8in. (3.5cm.); width near tip 1in. (2.6cm.) With a Tokubetsu Hozon (Especially Worthy of Preserving) certificate issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), dated 1984.1.27; a Hozon Tosugu (Mountings Worthy of Preserving) certificate issued by the Nihon Bijutsu Token Hozon Kyokai (Society for the Preservation of the Japan Art Sword), issued 1984.2.3; and a certificate for the blade issued by the Nihon Token Hozon Kai (Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Sword), dated 1984.7.4 (3)
