A Helmet with Standing Rivets (Hoshi-bachi Kabuto ) Edo period (17th century) The thirty-six plate black-lacquered iron hoshi bachi (bowl with small standing rivets), fitted with a large gold-lacquered forecrest of the Chinese character 'mountain' and two large gold-lacquered side crests of saws, the flanges on the helmet bowl and the edge of the peak covered with gilt-copper fukurin (decorative metal edging), the top of the bowl fitted with a five-stage tehen kanamono (decorative ring) decorated with scrolling vines on a nanako ground around the base; fitted with a five-lame hineno jikoro (neck guard) of kiritsuke kozane (false lamellae) laced in pale orange, the small fukikaeshi (turnbacks) lacquered black
