viz. Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pensilvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut & Rhode-Island of Aquanishuonigy the Country of the Confederate Indians Comprehending Aquanishuonigy proper, their Places of Residence, Ohio & Thuchsochruntie their Deer Hunting Countries, Couchsachrage & Skaniadarade their Beaver Hunting Countries of the Lakes Erie, Ontario and Champlain. Wherein is also shewn the antient and present seats of the Indian Nations carefully copied from the Original Publish'd at Philadelphia by Mr. Lewis Evans. Printed for Carington Bowles ... London, Published Jan'y. 1.1771. Approx. 21 x 29", framed and glazed, with hand-colored outlines of eastern territories listed in title block. Insert block smaller scale of Western region south of Lake Michigan that essentially would become the Northwest Territory. Many of the labels in "Indian country," other than locations of major towns, are for resources such as salt, coal, limestone. A note between the Kentucky and Great Salt Lick Rivers notes "Elephant Bones found here." Evans' map was based on first-hand accounts, many acquired during the French and Indian Wars, raging during the middle part of the century. Interesting historical notes in blank places on map. For example, in the Atlantic Ocean east of Long Island: Were nothing at Stake between the Crown of Great Britain and France but the Lands of the Ohio, we may reckon it as great a prize as ever been contended for between the two nations....had His Majesty been made acquainted with its value and great Importance the large Strides the French have been making for several Years past in their Incroachment on the Domains that his Majesty would Sacrifice one of the best Gems in his Crown to their Usurpation and boundless Ambition. Another block notes condition of the Ohio River in spring flood; still another notes "War Path" through the "Ouasioto Mountains," (southern Alleghenies) and much more. The area south of the Ohio River and east of the Kentucky River is labeled "Ohio" along with the portion north of the river. Ohio meets Virginia right about the aforementioned mountains. This 1771 version of Evans' map of the territories before the Revolutionary War is a relatively rare one, and important in westward expansion. Provenance: Descended Directly in the Putnam-Hildreth Families of Marietta, Ohio Condition: Minor toning. Water stain in upper right, mostly on border but slightly encroaching into title block. Not removed from frame, but does not appear to be laid down.
