Gillet for John Stockdale, 1800. 2° (648 x 485mm). Letterpress title, engraved index map by S.J. Neale, and engraved dedication. Engraved map on 24 sheets, 21 double-page, and a double-page engraved title. (Some light offsetting and occasional light spotting, a few plates trimmed across platemark, not affecting image, some double-page maps creased.) Contemporary half roan [rear free endpaper watermarked 1794], spine gilt in compartments and lettered in one, applied gilt morocco oval cartouche with Mansfield crest in upper compartment (rubbed and scuffed, boards marked). Provenance : Earls of Mansfield (crest on spine). FIRST ENGLISH EDITION OF CHAUCHARD'S MAP OF GERMANY, which was first published in Paris in 1784; this edition is described by the BM Catalogue of Printed Maps as 'with extensions to Sicily'. The index map bound before the title shows the order in which the 25 sheets are to be joined to form the complete map (which includes an engraved title and two index-map sheets), together with the engraved dedication. Stockdale also offered A Geographical, Historical and Political Description of the Empire of Germany (London: 1800) to accompany the map, which is noted on the title page of the map: 'Price eight guineas, with a volume of reference'.
