A FRENCH CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS BY GASTINNE RENETTE À PARIS
NO.546, DATED 1847
A FRENCH CASED PAIR OF PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS BY GASTINNE RENETTE À PARIS No.546, DATED 1847 With signed blued octagonal sighted rifled barrels, engraved case-hardened breeches struck with maker's mark, GR crowned, engraved case-hardened breech tangs with blued backsights, engraved case-hardened locks each decorated with a dragon and signed in miniscules, the tail of each lock chiselled in low relief, finely carved highly figured walnut half-stocks, fluted butts, engraved case-hardened steel mounts, the trigger-guards decorated with differing dragons, silver escutcheons impaled by the barrel bolts, and much finish throughout (the barrels appear to have been refinished within their period of use): in original lined and fitted brass-bound case veneered in ebony (one small chip, lock escutcheon missing), the lid with maker's gilt-stamped signature on the inside (rubbed), and with some original accessories. 17in (43.2cm)
