A FINE CASED PAIR OF FRENCH 32-BORE PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS BY CANTE, PARIS, MID-19TH CENTURY With browned twist octagonal multigroove rifled barrels respectively numbered '1' and '2' in gold towards the breech, each decorated with gold-inlaid lines and foliage, and with gold-inlaid signature 'CANTE A PARIS', blued blade fore-sights, case-hardened patent breeches each with gold-inlaid scrollwork and pierced platinum plug, border and scroll engraved case-hardened tangs and floating back-action locks, the former each incorporating the rear-sight and respectively numbered '1' and '2' in gold, the latter each signed 'CANTE A PARIS' in gold, highly figured Grenoble walnut half-stocks each with chequered butt, set triggers, border and scroll engraved case-hardened iron mounts including spurred trigger-guards and trigger-plates each with pineapple finial, original brass-mounted rosewood ramrods each with worm, and much original finish, barrelsmith's mark of Albert Bernard, in original brass-bound close-fitted mahogany case, the lid and compartments lined in pale green velvet, the remaining surfaces lined in tooled and gilt red morocco, and retaining nearly all its original accessories including a brass-mounted horn powder-flask with sprung plunger and a case-hardened main-spring clamp 9 13/16in. (25cm.) barrels
