Valentin Popov (b.1956) is a Ukrainian artist, currently residing in California. His work can be found in private and public collections around the world. Here is his beautiful set of copper etchings based on Ivan Turgenev's Torrents of Spring. The story of the publication of these copper etchings, which took about ten years, is as interesting as the art itself. Popov's work on the art within began in Kiev in 1983 as a project under a grant from the Academy of Fine Art of the USSR, taking three years to complete. The presiding directors at the time rejected his illustrations, considering them too avant-garde. Upon the appointment of new Academy officials in 1988, Popov's work was not only praised, but awarded the Silver Medal of the Academy of Fine Art of the USSR. Following this recognition, the prints were chosen to illustrate an edition of Turgenev's story to be published by the Ukrainian publishing company, Dnipro. With the economic collapse of the Soviet Union, the project fell through. Even so, an initial edition of 25 sets of artist proofs were completed in Russia, the majority of which are in private collections or museums in the Soviet Union. In 1982, while strolling one evening past a 19th century Ukrainian church, Popov found a couple of large pieces of copper. They were discarded pieces of roof from the church, which was undergoing restoration. The artist decided to use this very copper to produce his etchings. The original etching plates were cancelled after the production of this edition of only 42 sets (plus 5 Artist's Proofs, and 3 Museum Proofs). One-half of a cancelled plate is affixed in a debossed area on the front cover of the clamshell box. Letterpress by Leda Black, Black Swan Printing, Oakland, California. Etchings are printed by Valentin Popov at Smith Anderson Press, Palo Alto, California. Lot Amendments Condition: Fine. Item number: 231434
