4801 Pennsylvania Full Stock Percussion Rife Made by H. Gable, Jr.,

.40 caliber, 38" octagonal barrel with maker's name inscribed in flourished letters on top of barrel H. Gable, Jr. Lockplate marked W.C. Biddle & Co Philadelphia. Brass hardware, escutcheon inlay, and double-set trigger. Forward-action percussion lockplate stamped Philadelphia. Beautiful daisy pattern encompassing the front of muzzle. Maple stock. 53" overall length. Henry Gable Jr. flourished from 1850-1880. He was from Williamsport, of Lycoming Co. PA. [See Whisker, 1990: 23; also Gardiner, 1963: 70.] Provenance: Property of the former First National Bank of Fremont, Indiana Condition: Barrel has a deep rich chocolate brown finish. Top flat of barrel at rear sight from 2" either direction in a stipple pattern with daisies engraved in the metal. Same pattern is repeated around the front sight and around the flat of the muzzle. Front part of lock lightly cleaned, back region of lockplate nice deep chocolate brown color. The front of trigger guard has an old repair. Nice old piece of wood put in around the escutcheon inlay and top of wrist. Stock has had a coat of linseed oil applied. The stock has not been sanded or cleaned. Ramrod is not original.
