In 1960 BMW’s 494cc R50 and 594cc R60 twin-cylinder tourers were revised, gaining a ‘/2’ suffix. Most of the changes were inside the engine, which received a strengthened crankcase and crankshaft, hard-chromed piston rings, improved internal ventilation, new cam followers and a stronger clutch assembly. This R50/2 has an R60/2 engine, fitted as a new or reconditioned unit by BMW specialists Markhouse Motorcycles of Walthamstow during the mid-1980s when it was owned by Mr Gaston Caruana. The machine was supplied new in August 1967 by BMW dealer Denzel in Vienna, Austria. Its original owner used the BMW for long distance touring, including a tour of India, and brought the machine to the UK in 1976. The BMW was sold to Gaston Caruana, who also used it for touring before trading it in to well-known South London-based marque specialist, Bob Porecha. It was next owned (from 1989) by Mr Stephen Hill of East Grinstead, Surrey and in 1992 was purchased by the current vendor. Dry stored and not used for the last few years, ‘MMG 756P’ will require re-commissioning and the usual safety checks before returning to the road. Described as presentable and in generally excellent mechanical condition, the machine is offered with a substantial history file containing BMW archivist’s dating letter, sundry bills and receipts, various expired MoT certificates, DVLA history, road test articles, instruction manual and Swansea V5 document.
