1953 MG TD MIDGET SPORTS TWO SEATER Registration No. To be announced Chassis No. TD 10542 Engine No. SA 2445/2RR5 Replacement unit Red with beige interior Engine: four cylinder, overhead valve, 1,250cc, 45bhp at 5,500rpm; Gearbox: four speed synchromesh; Braked four wheel drum; Suspension: front, independent coil, rear, semi-elliptic. Right hand drive. The famous Midgets began in 1929 and from the T series of 1936 they had pushrod overhead valve engines. The post-war types, which did so much for MG's export achievements, began with the TC, which developed into the TD in 1950. This was an 85mph sports car that followed the design of the series Y saloon, sharing its box-section chassis, though with a sweep over the back axle, its rack and pinion steering and its coil sprung independent suspension which was a first for a Midget. 29,664 MG TDs were built between 1950 and 1953, but the vast majority were exported, hence good right hand drive examples are very much in demand in Britain. This car is almost entirely to original specification, and carries the standard two-door, two-seater open sporting bodywork with single-panel fold-flat screen, humped scuttle, cutaway doors, concealed hood, side curtains, and exposed slab-type rear fuel tank behind which the spare wheel is on an inclined mounting. Wheels are of the standard perforated-disc type of late TDs, and bumpers (with overriders on the front) are fitted to front and rear. The steering wheel fitted is not original however it is a highly desirable Mota Lita wooden one. The engine also, as is quite commonly found on the TD is a replacement unit. The rear suspension has been uprated with the addition of shock absorbers and there is also a pair of fog lamps mounted on the badge bar. During the past 19 years in the same ownership this TD has remarkably not been used other than as a showroom demonstration piece. It has however been kept in running condition and serviced when necessary. Recent work includes attention to the suspension and a new steering rack. By the time of the auction it will have a new MoT certificate. The paintwork has a few minor blemishes and slight blisters, but generally is very presentable.
