1938 BENTLEY 4¼-LITRE SPORTS SALOON COACHWORK BY PARK WARD Registration No. FGW 264 Chassis No. B179LE Engine No. E4 BJ Right hand drive The introduction by Rolls-Royce Motors of their new 3½-litre Bentley Sports Saloon in 1933 revived the marque Bentley and attracted many W O Bentley owners, who enthused about the sporting performance of this practical owner driver car. In 1936 the engine capacity was increased to 4¼-litre with corresponding improvement in performance which now provided a genuine 100mph and a higher cruising speed for European autoroutes. The Derby Bentley as it became known attracted the very best of the coachbuilders craft and Park Ward were entrusted with the lions share of the work building over 50 of the bodies, most of which were the very popular four door sports saloons. This 1938 example finished in black with brown leather upholstery is complete and in a very original condition. Although no previous history is known, the car was last road registered in 1976 since when it has been in storage. The opportunity of finding an original unrestored prewar Derby Bentley is rare and this car will provide a rewarding restoration project.
