One of the most charismatic model names in motorcycling history, ‘International’ was first used by Norton for its top-of-the-range sports roadster in 1932. The Inter’s overhead-camshaft engine had been developed in the works racers for the preceding two years, and although it retained the classic 79x100mm bore/stroke dimensions and shaft-and-bevels cam drive of the existing CS1, was entirely new. Based on the works bikes and intended for racing, the International could nevertheless be ordered with refinements such as lights and a kickstarter-equipped gearbox. By the time production halted in 1939 it was being built with a four-speed foot-change ’box and plunger rear suspension (the ‘Garden Gate’ frame), reappearing after the war in similar guise save for the adoption of the hydraulically-damped Roadholder front fork, which replaced the pre-war girder. The Inter remained fundamentally unchanged until 1953 when it gained the Featherbed frame, all-alloy engine and ‘laid down’ gearbox. Norton factory records confirm that the frame, engine and gearbox numbers of this highly original Model 30 International are all correct. The machine was despatched from Bracebridge Street on 17th December 1936 to agent A Francis and was sold new to one L King, being registered in his name on 29th of the month. Retaining the correct 21” front and 20” rear wheels, the machine also boasts chromium plating to the fuel and oil tanks and other cycle parts. (For an extra £5 over the £90 list price Norton would provide a customer with ‘P&P’, meaning ‘Plate & Polish’). This Norton International was imported into Canada in the mid-1950s and comes with an old UK tax disc dated 1954. The machine has never been registered for the road since, although the enthusiast vendor has ridden it using his ‘multi vehicle collector plate’ as well as entering it in various Vintage racing events in Canada. Restored in 2002, the Inter is fitted with the optional racing cylinder head (which has hairpin valve springs) while recent work includes the fitting of a new oil pump, electrical wiring and a period lighting set. If purchased by a UK resident, this motorcycle will attract VAT at the concessionary rate of 5% (of the landed value) applied to historic vehicles. Offered without reserve, the machine comes with HM Revenue & Customs letter of confirmation and Swansea V5C.
